EDUCATION NEWS

  • OU President Joseph Harroz says Oklahoma risks falling behind as other states invest more in higher education—Texas invests four times more and Florida more than double what Oklahoma does. OU is asking lawmakers this year to invest $75 million each in OU and OSU so more Oklahomans can earn four-year degrees and find good jobs.  The Oklahoman

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Oklahoma Senate bill seeks to codify Gov. Kevin Stitt's order banning state funds for diversity, equity and inclusion programs at universities. If enacted, colleges must file a compliance certificate every July 1 starting in 2026, and lawmakers debate whether it stops preferential treatment while critics worry about limiting opportunities for women and minorities.  The Oklahoman
  • Matina Davis from Lawton and Mike Reynolds from Norman were arrested for posting online statements under Oklahoma’s 1929 false rumors law, which had not been enforced in decades. Local officials and community leaders are now debating the law's fairness—raising concerns about free speech and its limits.  KGOU
  • Gov. Kevin Stitt said Forestry Services did not deploy its firefighting crews correctly during the March 14 fire that killed four people, scorched more than 100,000 acres and destroyed over 500 homes—he fired top staff and formed a Wildland Fire Response Working Group that will meet in the next 30 days with state officials and first responders to review the agency’s response.  KGOU
