EDUCATION NEWS

  • The state House and Senate approved a bill to permanently ban students from using personal cellphones in public schools – the measure, buoyed by positive feedback from educators and parents, is now headed to the governor’s desk.  OU Daily

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The DEA announced new rules for Oklahoma medical marijuana dispensaries and began accepting applications today at a $794 fee; businesses must submit required information within 60 days to access potential tax breaks and banking benefits — a move aimed at standardizing compliance — said the Oklahoma Medical Marijuana Authority.  The Oklahoman
  • Norman police and the sheriff’s office planned to clear a homeless encampment near Food and Shelter at 201 Reed Ave Tuesday to balance public safety with outreach and services. Councilmember Gandesberry urged residents to keep those involved in their prayers and encouraged nonprofit volunteer support.  OU Daily

SPORTS NEWS

  • OU football has many prospects for the 2027 NFL Draft. Among them, defensive lineman David Stone & defensive back Eli Bowen are expected to shine, while quarterback John Mateer may also make an impact next season.  The Oklahoman
  • Cornerback Dakoda Fields transferred from Oregon to OU for a fresh start (citing better play and varied dining options in Norman) under coach Brent Venables.  The Oklahoman
  • The Oklahoma Supreme Court ruled that the NCAA filed the wrong document to appeal OU linebacker Owen Heinecke’s eligibility — delaying his appeal. The NCAA must file an amended petition by May 11 and a notice of record completion by June 16 following a preliminary injunction granted on April 16.  The Oklahoman
  • Oklahoma remains atop SEC softball rankings with a 46-6 record after sweeping Georgia last weekend and will face Texas A&M in a three-game series later this week ahead of the conference tournament in Lexington, Kentucky.  The Oklahoman
