Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 13th of May.
Good morning, Norman.
A new Oklahoma law bans corporal punishment for all students with disabilities defined by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, extending the previous rule that only covered those with significant cognitive disabilities.
Senate Bill 364 passed in both chambers and takes effect after Gov. Kevin Stitt permitted it without his signature — eliminating the option for parents to waive the punishment ban.
Norman partnered with Mental Health Association Oklahoma on May 9 to launch 'A Better Way – Opportunity Knocks' that offers homeless residents a two-week plan with daily meals, paid work, and help finding housing.
The program uses opioid settlement funds and comes after a rise in homelessness—residents will see a service van on the streets by June 1.
The Oklahoma Poison Center warned residents to watch for hazards as outdoor chores increase, noting a rise in calls about pool chemicals and spider bites—experts advise using gloves, opening chemicals outside, and storing pesticides safely.
The center urged families to check storage areas for spiders and chemicals while reminding locals that help is available 24/7.
Former OU softball players including Tiare Jennings, Sydney Romero, and Kinzie Hansen will compete in MLB Home Run Derby X, a three-on-three contest that will have an event in Oklahoma City on August 23 at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark—this competition spans six cities with a season-long format leading to a final in Salt Lake City.
OSAA has released the brackets for the 2025 high school baseball state tournaments for Classes 6A through 2AII—early rounds are hosted at venues including Jenks, Sapulpa, Norman North, Seminole State and Shawnee with championship games set at ONEOK Field, Bricktown Ballpark and Shawnee. Local teams will compete over the coming weeks for the state title.
The NCAA Division I Softball Tournament will start its 64-team regional round on May 16 in Norman, where the No. 2 seeded Sooners will host Omaha, California + Boston University, with their double-elimination bracket opening against Boston University at 6 p.m. ET on ESPNU as they seek a fifth straight title.
