EDUCATION NEWS

  • State Superintendent Ryan Walters issued a mandate requiring Oklahoma public schools to provide free cafeteria meals for every student using existing state and federal funds—schools must submit their budgets for review and may face penalties if their budgets cannot cover meal costs.  OU Daily

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Oklahoma firefighters left Saturday and arrived early Sunday to help Texas search and recovery efforts after catastrophic floods killed at least 104 people, including 28 children. Chief Scott Douglas said the team was integrated into the local 911 system and worked in areas like Hamilton, New Braunfels, Copperas, and Marble Falls—taking part in swift water rescues as the waters receded.  News9
  • The Oklahoma Tourism and Recreation Department closed all state park restaurants after ending its contract with Lookout Kitchen over unpaid bills and other violations. The closure came after Lookout Kitchen failed to meet obligations detailed in a notice sent on May 16 — with the operator not correcting issues by July 7 — and parks now offer grab-and-go food options while food trucks may be used in the future.  News9
  • The Oklahoma Highway Patrol announced it will reallocate patrol resources from urban areas including Oklahoma City, Tulsa, Edmond, Moore, Norman, Midwest City and Del City to focus on regions with fewer law enforcement services by Nov. 1. Rep. Andy Fugate criticized the decision—saying that reducing highway patrols may hinder efforts to stop human and drug trafficking.  The Oklahoman
  • Oklahomans who saw damage from the March wildfires and straight-line winds have until Tuesday, July 22 to apply for FEMA help online, through the mobile app, or by calling the FEMA helpline—homeowners and renters in affected counties must act before the deadline to cover costs like home repairs, rental expenses, and moving. This assistance applies to those in Cleveland, Creek, Lincoln, Logan, Oklahoma, Pawnee, and Payne counties.  News9
