ECONOMY NEWS

  • A study by the University of Cincinnati Economics Center for the state regents found that every dollar invested in public higher education produces over $17 in economic output—supporting more than 111,000 jobs and generating over $460 million in tax revenue—while most Oklahoma college graduates remain in state and earn higher wages with increased degree levels.  The Oklahoman

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Norman City Council approved an extension to its Norman On-Demand transit service from Aug. 21 to June 30 — and it approved a $400,000 purchase of a vacant parcel at 1305 Triad Village Drive for a permanent supportive housing project — at its Tuesday meeting. The unanimous votes support efforts to increase affordable housing using HOME funds.  OU Daily
  • Local police departments are responding to the Highway Patrol’s plan to remove troopers from Oklahoma and Tulsa counties effective November 1. Norman police are assessing how this change will affect traffic safety on I-35—officials say local agencies need more training for handling interstate accidents.  News9
  • The Oklahoma State Department of Public Safety said in a July 3 press release that it will shift highway patrol resources from major metros and that local police in Oklahoma City, Edmond, Moore, Norman, Midwest City, Del City and Tulsa will take over the work starting Nov. 1. Local police leaders said they were surprised and are reviewing the new duties — several departments feel unprepared for the change.  KGOU
