Here's your local news at a glance for Monday, the 28th of July.
Good morning, Norman.
Norman City Council approved the purchase of Griffin Community Park from the State Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services for $3,306,811.48 — with a $500,000 credit applied after over six years of leasing the property as a soccer complex — on July 22.
Council members reviewed proposals for a housing development with about 1,800 affordable homes and a pedestrian bridge, and city leaders will have a chance to buy the remainder once state operations move to Oklahoma City and new facility plans are completed.
Meteor experts say that while the bright moon will limit views of the Perseid meteor shower on August 12, the Southern Delta Aquariids (and the Alpha Capricornids) will peak Tuesday night with up to 20 to 30 meteors per hour.
They advise local viewers to watch (after midnight) from dark areas free of city lights to catch the best show.
OU football began preseason camp this week under coach Brent Venables — a shift from a tough last season.
The team will rely on quarterback John Mateer and new players — it is set to play Illinois State on Aug. 30.
