Good morning, Norman. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 15th of November.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • St. Joseph Catholic Church will host its 103rd annual Thanksgiving Dinner at the Parish Center, 421 E. Acres, on Sunday, Nov. 16 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.—volunteers from the Women’s Club and Knights of Columbus will cook and serve food for 500 people.  The Norman Transcript
  • Norman food pantries are scrambling to support families facing hunger from reduced SNAP funding after a 43-day government shutdown ended Wednesday; Norman Food and Shelter recently fed nearly 100 families and is preparing a Thanksgiving meal for up to 2,000 guests amid fewer volunteers — community donations have boosted support.  OU Daily

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Oklahoma Superintendent Lindel Fields proposed adding 15 days to the school year to boost student performance — a move that would align state requirements with national averages. Rhonda Baker from the Greater Oklahoma City Chamber said the change would give students a fresh start each morning — a shift to help the state catch up with neighboring districts.  News9
  • Oklahoma public schools will not adopt new social studies textbooks next year because the academic standards are still being decided. The State Textbook Committee voted Friday, November 14th—pausing the adoption process while the state Supreme Court and State Department of Education review the standards.  The Norman Transcript
  • The OU Interfraternity Council resolved its investigation last week into hazing at Phi Delta Theta and Kappa Sigma, finding that fall hazing events included dangerous tasks and illegal alcohol use that sometimes led to hospitalizations. The investigations resulted in multiple charges under the student conduct code for practices involving degrading and harmful behavior.  OU Daily

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Oklahoma regulators denied OG&E’s request to use CWIP to fund natural gas turbines at Horseshoe Lake Power Plant—saying the cost-recovery measure did not apply because the application was filed before Senate Bill 998. OG&E received preapproval to build the turbines but must file a large-load tariff by July 1 to keep residential rates protected.  KGOU
  • Flight experts warn that delays and cancellations may continue during Thanksgiving as air traffic controllers—who worked nearly six weeks without pay due to a Senate shutdown—strain an already understaffed system. OKC Will Rogers International Airport saw few cancellations, but travelers should check with their airlines to confirm flight status.  The Oklahoman
