COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Cathy Billings took over as executive director for Food and Shelter after her board appointment on Oct. 27. She brings extensive experience from state government and mental health work to boost local community services in Norman.  OU Daily
  • Meals on Wheels of Norman held a holiday marketplace at Bethel Baptist Annex Thursday to raise funds for its meal delivery program (which supplies 1,500 meals weekly and 300 meals a day) by offering donors a free poinsettia with each contribution.  The Norman Transcript

CULTURE NEWS

  • Twenty-one individuals and organizations were chosen as nominees for the 46th Oklahoma Governor’s Arts Awards, with the ceremony scheduled for Jan. 20 at the state Capitol—OKC rapper Jabee Williams will receive the Community Service Award.  The Oklahoman
  • Christmas comedy play Alcoholidays returns Friday at 8 p.m. at 3rd Act Theater Company in Oklahoma City. Written by Norman couple Ted Satterfield and Melanie Wilderman, the play offers a humorous look at holiday festivities and will have several December showings (tickets start at $25 with available discounts).  OU Daily

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Home insurance rates in Oklahoma have jumped due to rising claims, inflation, and extreme weather, leaving long-time policyholders struggling with higher costs. Lawmakers and the Insurance Commissioner will propose reforms next year — such as switching to a file-and-use system and revising claim review rules — to ease the burden on consumers.  KGOU
  • CHASM Advanced Materials announced a $24 million expansion in Cleveland County (supported by a $5 million construction loan from the Economic Development Coalition) that will create 84 high-skilled jobs. The project will boost local industry in the area.  The Norman Transcript

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The OU Graduate Student Senate passed a resolution urging the administration to explain the process behind placing a graduate instructor on leave amid claims of religious discrimination and online threats. They also demand stronger campus protections to maintain academic integrity.  OU Daily
  • Norman Public Schools held its second Community Listening Session Tuesday to focus on teaching, learning and a culture of belonging.
