ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The U.S. Department of Energy recommends residents set their thermostats to 68 degrees this winter to keep homes warm while saving energy. It also advises lowering temperatures when away or asleep to help cut energy costs as Norman experiences varying cold spells.  The Oklahoman

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Although SNAP benefits have returned, local families continue to face housing challenges after cuts during a 43-day shutdown, which led to delayed rent payments and eviction filings; nonprofit Stay Housed received many calls + expects more assistance requests to help residents bridge budget gaps.  The Oklahoman
  • Social work students at OU called on lawmakers yesterday to address the growing homelessness crisis by urging investments in shelter capacity, affordable housing, and long-term solutions instead of penalizing poverty through measures like Senate Bill 1205 (the proposed Oklahoma Safe Neighborhoods Act).  The Oklahoman

SPORTS NEWS

  • OU linebacker Kobie McKinzie told On3 he planned to join the transfer portal on Sunday. His decision is the first since the playoff loss & may shift the Sooners’ linebacker depth as they plan for future NFL talent moves.  The Oklahoman
  • The No. 8 OU women's basketball team hosts North Carolina Central today at noon CT at Lloyd Noble Center in Norman ahead of their conference opener against Texas A&M on Jan. 1. The game airs on SEC+.  The Oklahoman
  • Local sports broadcasts, including the OKC Thunder games, are at risk if a planned sale to DAZN is not finalized next month. The network may dissolve after a missed rights payment, which could cause broadcast rights for 30 NBA, NHL & MLB teams to revert to their individual teams.  The Oklahoman
